Sunday 1/26 Edition: Hang Your Hat - 432 Park Soon-To-Be Tallest Residential Building

Soon-To-Be Tallest Residential Building’s Interior is Magnificent

At 1,396 feet, 432 Park will be the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere when it’s completed in 2015 — but it’s not just its size that’s impressive.

Designer Deborah Berke’s says her focus was to make the most of the apartments’ perch above the city. Double-height ceilings and beautiful oak flooring are highlights, while huge square windows provide an unparalleled view.

The building has two penthouses, one on the 96th floor that sold for $95 million and another on the 95th, currently priced at $85 million.

The building’s architect Rafael Viñoly made news back in September when his Walkie Talkie building wreaked havoc on London’s streets, emitting a reflection so hot it melted cars and literally fried eggs on the sidewalk. But if these renderings are any indication, this building should be more of a success.

From the outside, rows of six 100-square-foot windows give the building the square look of a waffle iron.

Inside, Berke’s design is just as geometric. The huge windows are in a straight line from the front door, making the most of the apartment’s perch above the city.

According to Berke, the oak herringbone floors are a take on Park Avenue’s more traditional apartment buildings.

The kitchens will be outfitted with sleek marble countertops and stainless steel appliances.

But the kitchen’s best feature has to be this 10-foot-long marble breakfast bar framed against the window. Just imagine enjoying your morning coffee here, with all of Manhattan sprawled out below you.

The master suite’s floor plan was designed so that the bed would be perfectly aligned with the window, offering the best views possible first thing in the morning.

The master suite has separated his and hers bathrooms. Looking north from the marble-covered shower, you’ll get a peek of Central Park and the Upper East Side.

432 Park will dramatically change the skyline around Central Park once it’s completed in 2015.

Saturday 1/25 Edition - The Best Of Brooklyn’s New Architecture And Interior Design

The Best Of Brooklyn’s New Architecture And Interior Design

Design Brooklyn: Renovation, Restoration, Innovation gives an inside look at the aesthetic rise of Brooklyn design, including  a peak at Beastie Boy Mike D’s townhouse.

The Brooklyn of today is utterly unrecognizable compared to what it was just 10 years ago: Williamsburg’s Bedford Avenue went from being a Polish family area to a 24/7 hipster parade. Most recently, an artisanal porridge shop opened in Park Slope–a metaphorical tombstone of the gritty borough Jay-Z described in “Brooklyn (We Go Hard).”

Design Brooklyn: Renovation, Restoration, Innovation, a new book by Anne Hellman, chronicles the compelling changes in residential and commercial architecture and interior design in a borough that’s quickly replacing Manhattan as New York’s main hub of arts and culture. The book showcases the crème de la crème of Brooklyn design, broken into four sections: Renovation, Restoration, Innovation, and Industry.

One of the featured residential tours gives a peek inside the renovated Cobble Hill townhouse of Beastie Boy Mike D. Raised in Brooklyn by an interior designer and an art dealer, Mike D has design in his DNA. “I think it’s the sense of community that Brooklyn is able to have that Manhattan is a little too chaotic and dense to have,” he says in an interview in the book’s forward. “I’ve always considered it normal to be very conscious and aware of every aesthetic decision.”

His townhouse, where he lives with filmmaker Tamra Davis and their sons, is filled with Brooklyn-designed wallpaper, furniture, lighting, and curtains. And the man who famously promised there would be “No Sleep Til Brooklyn” now gets his rest in an antique bed he had stripped and refurbished.

Also featured is a study of the 1899 ship hangar at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, which is being renovated and re-purposed into a 77,000-square-foot cooperative workspace called New Lab. David Belt, founder of developer Macro Sea, Inc., collaborated with Bushwick-based arts collective 3rd Ward in coming up with the New Lab model, which will support the work of design entrepreneurs. “The idea is to create a true collective, with no one institution or entity overseeing everyone else,” Belt explains in the book. Designed by Macro Sea and Rogers Marvel Architects, New Lab is scheduled to open later this year, and will provide not only office and studio space, but also access to 3-D molding machines, 3-D printers, and water jets.

Credit: Michel Arnaud
Design Brooklyn also offers a compendium of creatively designed restaurants like Greenpoint’s Bellocq Tea Atelier, with a rustic fireplace that turns a dank warehouse into a cozy parlor, or Roberta’s in Bushwick, which is made ad hoc with doors as tabletops and a pizza oven cleverly installed via a hole in the roof.

There is a chapter devoted to profiling and interviewing 21 “Designers in Their Studios”–including Elasticco in Gowanus, Grow House Grow! in Bushwick, and Egg Collective in Clinton Hill. The photographs here are eye-candy for anyone with a creative approach towards interiors or with a healthy curiosity about how this borough has evolved. You can buy Design Brooklyn for $25 here.

Saturday 1/18 Edition: Three Master Barbers on the Secrets to Maintaining a Flawless Beard

You’ve finally given your five o’clock shadow a chance to make a statement, but you’ve still got to keep it in check. Three master barbers from the top names in mens grooming tell you how below.

Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth

Your Routine (What to Do)

The expert: Thomas Cheung, The Art of Shaving (Tysons Corner in McLean, VA)
The inspiration: Chris Hemsworth, Ben Affleck, George Clooney. “They all have beard styles that are classic and well-groomed.

Daily: “I suggest all gentlemen with beards comb or brush them. You don’t just wake up and go if you want to look your best. You wouldn’t leave the house without brushing your teeth or styling your hair. Hold your beard to the same standard.”
Weekly: “Depending on how quickly your beard grows and how you style it, you might want to take a pair of trimmers or a razor to line it up.”
Monthly:  “Just like a haircut, your beard needs a cleanup session. Go see a professional barber that knows about beards. Trim the stragglers, realign the borders, and shape up the beard to fit your face correctly. Most guys look better with a bit more weight on the beard towards the chin, and taper the beard the closer you get to ears to slim the face.”

Your Look (What Not to Do)
The expert: Matt Wire, Harry’s Corner Shop (64 MacDougal Street)
The inspiration: Jeff Bridges on the red carpet, not Keanu Reeves on a park bench
The most common mistake: “Trimming your neck beard too high. There’s nothing weirder than a guy who cuts the bottom of his beard high enough that it looks funny when they open their mouth. Trim no higher than the crease where your jaw meets your neck. It’s always better to have too much than too little.”
When in doubt: “Just knock it down to stubble with your electric clippers. More often than not, you’ll look better with a heavy five o’clock shadow than a beard that’s gotten out of line.”
Wire’s personal rule of thumb: “Use product only when absolutely necessary. Your facial hair is naturally healthier on its own. Maintain the shape not the hair itself.”

Adam Levine

Adam Levine

Your Tools & Products

The expert: José Sosa, Kiehl’s Since 1851 (678 Ninth Ave.)
The inspiration: Adam Levine. “He always has a nice, manicured beard.”
“The ideal beard is a perfect balance between clean-cut and wild.  It has sharp and defined lines around the edges, with everything else just slightly manicured to showcase the natural look and feel of the hair.”
The tools: “Trimmers, clippers, a straight razor and a master barber’s touch.”
The products: “Apply Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate to soften the beard daily, so when someone comes in close for a hug, they don’t receive a prick from hard hair.  A few drops in the morning every day, just enough to coat the beard, goes a long way to soften it. Also, the longer the beard, the dryer the skin underneath, so use a rich moisturizer like Kiehl’s Facial Fuel, to keep the skin underneath healthy.”

George Clooney

George Clooney

DO

“Make sure having a beard is right for you. Some people don’t have the growth patterns or the face shape for a good looking beard. Don’t worry, clean faces are just as handsome.” -MW (Harrys)
DON’T
“Don’t try to wear a style that doesn’t work for your beard’s particular set of characteristics. Everyone’s beard has a different density, texture and structure. Some styles just won’t look good on some men.” -TC (The Art of Shaving)
DO
“Try to keep the style of your beard as natural as possible. A lot of men like to shape their beards in a style that the hair doesn’t naturally go, so maintenance is very high. If you keep your beard natural, the maintenance will be much easier.” -JS (Kiehl’s)
DON’T
“A beard isn’t just ‘not shaving.’ You still need to take care of your face even if you’re channeling your inner lumberjack.” -MW (Harrys)
DO
“Wash your beard like you would wash your hair.” -TC (The Art of Shaving)DON’T
“Don’t neglect it with products that will keep it healthy and let it grow crazy without maintenance.” -JS (Kiehl’s)

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck

Finally, When to Take It Off

“When you forget what your face looks like. Or when eating a bowl of soup requires you to move the beard out of the way.“ -MW (Harrys)
“When your wife gets tired of it.” -JS (Kiehl’s)

“When you don’t like it anymore. First, you’re a man. Second, you’re a man with a beard—do what you want!” -TC (The Art of Shaving)

Saturday 1/11 Edition: You Will Want to Stay in This Amazing Tree Top Hotel

Swedish architects seem to have a knack for modern, contemporary design and an eye for cutting edge creations. Three years ago, founders Britta and Kent utilized those talents when they enlisted some of Scandinavia’s leading architects Cyrén & Cyrén to build Treehotel in Sweden. Mixing together nature and avant-garde concepts, the five-room community sits 13-19 feet above Harads village among the trees.

 Treehotel
Inspired by the film The Tree Lover by Jonas Selberg Augusten, Treehotel was modeled around the movie’s philosophy of the significance of trees for human beings. It is meant to be a place where nature, ecological values, comfort and modern design are combined with minimal environmental impact.
 Treehotel
When arriving at the tree-top property, you’ll enter Britta’s guest house to check-in. This home, decorated in 1930-1950s styles, is also the setting for all meals. A five minute walk takes guests to the five treerooms, each with a different design and varying between 161-322 square feet of space. The lighting, furniture and fabrics are all unique to the specific accommodation. Suspended in the air, the buildings are reached by ramp, bridge or electric stairs.
 Treehotel
One of the most interesting structures is The Mirrorcube which is designed with mirrored walls acting as a camouflage in the forest. The 13x13x13-feet walls reflect their surrounding elements and sits on an aluminum frame at the trunk. In case you were wondering what keeps our flying friends from running into the cube, infrared film visible to birds has been placed around the building to prevent any accidents.
 Treehotel
Inside, the surfaces are made with birch wood and it sleeps two guests with a double bed, bathroom, lounge and rooftop terrace. Six windows allow for panoramic views of Harads and minimal décor is placed throughout the wooden interiors.
 Treehotel
On the outside, The Bird’s nest looks, well…like its name suggests, but with a larger-than-life façade. Built as a circular room, the space inside is 182 feet squared with separate bedrooms, a bathroom and living area. Hidden among the trees, the room is reached by retractable stairs.
 Treehotel
Of all the choices, we personally love the look and vibe of The Cabin. Overlooking the Lule River valley, this hut is intimate, fitting only two guests and offers floor-to-ceiling and panoramic windows allow lots of natural light to flow through. A horizontal bridge gives you access to the room and it is also attached to a large wooden deck where travelers can soak in the beautiful landscapes.
 Treehotel
Whichever room peaks your interest, there’s no doubt you’ll be impressed by the imaginative design and simplistic décor that enhances a feel of airy lightness in each space. Along with the treerooms, the property offers a sauna with room for eight people. There is also a hot tub and access to the relaxation area. Rooms begin at around USD $677 per night/double occupancy and includes a daily breakfast buffet.
